城 Japanese Castle - English Ver.

The purpose of building the castle tower and the meaning of the castle tower in Japanese castles seems to have varied depending on the times.

-It was used as the final fort in battle, a place to view the enemy from a distance during battle, observe the enemy and command the battle.

-As a result of suppressing many enemies during the Warring States period, it was built as a symbol of power that controlled the territory. In the latter half, it was also used to show off to the territories and the Sengoku Daimyo (the leader of each prefecture) asserted his rule over the territories by making gorgeous decorations on the tall towers.

-They were built one after another for the purpose of revealing the siege network and power of the shogun who put pressure on the vassals who stayed in Osaka Castle and their loyal patrons.

-The castle tower was maintained as a symbolic building of the administrative bodies of each daimyo.

-Some of the castles were built up to the castle tower due to the need for strengthening the defence of the sea, due to the opening pressure from overseas. (Matsumae Castle etc.)
